The police have been questioning Mary Sewell about the murder. You remember her, a lovely girl before she got mixed up with that lot…

Surely this was proof that the Turtle knew more than he was letting on concerning the murder of Cliff Parker. Mary Sewell, a pretty but headstrong young woman who had somehow been attracted to the dubious courage of the gangster fraternity in East London, just happened to be Harry Haggerty’s cousin.

This having given Pincher plenty to think about, he was still far from decided what he was going to do about it. But, whatever it was, it had to be for the good of the Burscombe before everything else.

He was suddenly jolted out of his thoughts by CPO Doyle’s sharp command of, ‘As soon as you’ve finished there, Martin, get yourself down to the main gate and pick up a delivery that’s just arrived for the KOYLI’s commanding officer.’

‘Me, chief?’

‘Your fault for being the first person I come across.’

Pincher tutted and asked, ‘What is it, chief?’

‘How the hell should I know?’ Really, thought Doyle, these men ask for a lot sometimes. Even if he did know what the delivery was, it had nothing to do with him. The only important thing was that it should meet up with its recipient.

Pincher, more than familiar with unhelpful answers from senior rates, decided not to dwell on it but, instead, remembered something else he wanted to know. ‘Chief, has there been any word about Les? I mean Gordy?’

Paddy stopped and looked expectantly to the chief as well. Not that he had any liking for Les Gordy, but the Irish really did need to stick together in this Godless place.

‘Not yet,’ replied Doyle, suddenly appearing more human. ‘As soon as I hear anything I’ll let you know.’ Privately, it was a matter of concern to him that the Walrus had had to touch down somewhere in Norway, possibly in a place since captured by the Germans. What bothered him most was that he might have been partly responsible for getting that stupid lad incarcerated in some prison camp somewhere or possibly even killed. Incompetent as he was, he did not deserve that.

‘Thanks, chief,’ said Pincher.

He wandered along the deck and then off down the gangway, quickly explaining to the Regulating Petty Officer what he was about and then made his way forlornly along the quayside to the gatehouse in the black-out. In a way he should have been pleased for the few moments of freedom that this stroll was offering him but he found that he would have much preferred to have been sitting back in the mess scoffing down his supper. He was not as young as he once was.

After the lieutenant at the other end had given him the small crate that he had come to collect, he started to amble back, looking carefully at the ground so that he did not trip on anything unexpected.

Suddenly, out the corner of his eye, he thought he saw a shadow within a shadow creeping alongside a nearby building.
